Agave breeding socks

IRSA Taranto CNR

IRSA Taranto CNR

A preliminary experiment was carried out in the Mar Piccolo of Taranto to evaluate the use of socks made of natural vegetable fibres in mussel farming. The durability in immersion of both hemp and agave was tested.

Hemp proved to be unsuitable as it fragments after about 70 days. In contrast, agave proved suitable for further experimentation as it remained intact even after 150 days of immersion. The agave breeding stockings ensured growth until commercial size was reached, with results comparable to those of conventional plastic nets. Experimentation will continue by setting up a production-scale plant and testing the suitability of the fibre for 'seed' establishment.
